Track 71: Becks Lawyer
-
SPEAKER_01: Who's this?
-
SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is Ben.
-
SPEAKER_01: Ben?
-
SPEAKER_01: From Clerk to Soul.
-
SPEAKER_00: Oh, hi, how are you?
-
SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
-
SPEAKER_01: Sorry, I'm just returning a page.
-
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't page you.
-
SPEAKER_00: My name is Brian McPherson.
-
SPEAKER_01: Brian McPherson?
-
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
-
SPEAKER_01: Oh, you, um, you're the attorney, right?
-
SPEAKER_01: I am an A attorney, yes.
-
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I see the attorney, because I don't, I don't know any, but I know about you, so...
-
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yes, how do you know about me?
-
SPEAKER_01: I was talking to somebody from that band,
-
SPEAKER_01: negative land, actually.
-
SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm sure they had lots of nice things to say about me, right?
-
SPEAKER_01: Hell yeah, yeah, it was all good.
-
SPEAKER_01: So, but that doesn't explain the page I got there.
-
SPEAKER_00: No, it doesn't.
-
SPEAKER_00: You know, it's funny, I heard from those negative land guys,
-
SPEAKER_00: and I didn't even say anything to them.
-
SPEAKER_00: It's just like they just felt compelled to send me an email
-
SPEAKER_00: because I represent back and because I said copyright infringement is wrong, you know?
-
SPEAKER_00: you know?
-
SPEAKER_00: Oh.
-
SPEAKER_00: I was like, hey, who asked you?
-
SPEAKER_00: You know?
-
SPEAKER_00: It's like, mind your own business.
-
SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm sure then you wouldn't want to be part of their camp.
-
SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't give a shit what they do, and it's like, you know, fine.
-
SPEAKER_00: But, you know, if I represent somebody whose work is being ripped off and they're mad about it,
-
SPEAKER_00: the client, then I'll do whatever the client asked me to.
-
SPEAKER_00: But in this case, back said, I don't care.
-
SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, okay, I don't care either.
-
SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, yeah, but as far as collective soul is concerned, and, you know, while I've got you on the front,
-
SPEAKER_01: I mean, do you know what our problem is?
-
SPEAKER_01: I mean, can you...
-
SPEAKER_00: No, what do you guys have going on?
-
SPEAKER_01: Nothing, I mean, we just don't seem that good, you know, so...
-
SPEAKER_00: Who is this, man?
-
SPEAKER_00: Ben.
-
SPEAKER_00: Ben from Collective Soul, Ben what?
-
SPEAKER_01: Claypaper?
-
SPEAKER_00: Ben Claypaper.
-
SPEAKER_00: Who is this?
-
SPEAKER_00: Doc some negative lens?
-
SPEAKER_01: No, that's, no, that's...
-
SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
-
SPEAKER_01: What's your number?
-
SPEAKER_01: Don't you have caller ID?
-
SPEAKER_01: No, what's your number?
-
SPEAKER_01: Let me call your number.
-
SPEAKER_01: Let me call you back, Ben.
-
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's certainly no problem.
-
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
-
SPEAKER_01: Well, do I need to call you back?
-
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh, I mean, if you'd like, I just want to know, you know, what can we do?
-
SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're the music attorney, right?
-
SPEAKER_01: Well, this is so weird that I got your number.
-
SPEAKER_01: What can you do about, what, being good or not good?
-
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, we're just, we just seem to be riddled with a lot of mediocrity lately.
-
SPEAKER_01: What do you do in the end collective soul?
-
SPEAKER_01: Base?
-
SPEAKER_00: You play bass, and you don't think your music is good?
-
SPEAKER_01: No, I'm kind of apprehensive to say anything.
-
SPEAKER_00: Why don't you quit the band then?
-
SPEAKER_00: Who's your attorney?
-
SPEAKER_00: Don't you guys have Jonathan Haft or something like that?
-
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
-
SPEAKER_00: The bald guy, right?
-
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
-
SPEAKER_01: Right.
-
SPEAKER_00: Why don't you ask him?
-
SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, but I got this page and everything.
-
SPEAKER_01: I'm not really sure.
-
SPEAKER_01: I'm not.
-
SPEAKER_01: This is the strangest call I think I've ever had, so.
-
SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't really know the music that well.
-
SPEAKER_00: It seems like it's pretty successful.
-
SPEAKER_00: Well, it's not good.
-
SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, it's not the kind of music I like.
-
SPEAKER_00: That doesn't mean it's not good.
-
SPEAKER_00: But, you know, I've seen some of the videos.
-
SPEAKER_00: kind of mainstream, melodramatic, you know, very catchy, very commercial, that you guys
-
SPEAKER_00: saw a lot of records?
-
SPEAKER_00: We have.
-
SPEAKER_00: You know, probably got real big houses and stuff.
-
SPEAKER_01: Well, we broke up, you know.
-
SPEAKER_00: Oh, you did?
-
SPEAKER_01: Before the record, the first record even came out.
-
SPEAKER_01: Oh.
-
SPEAKER_00: But they were back together making millions.
-
SPEAKER_01: Well, they wanted it.
-
SPEAKER_01: You know, it was kind of a post-mortem, you know, notification or whatever that we got.
-
SPEAKER_01: So we weren't even a band, and we hadn't seen each other in some time.
-
SPEAKER_01: But then, you know, they wanted to make us an offer, and we did it, and kind of tried to bury it, give a burial to all those things that were going on, problem-wise with the band.
-
SPEAKER_01: But I just don't think it sucks, really.
-
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you should quit then.
-
SPEAKER_01: All right.
-
SPEAKER_00: All right.
-
SPEAKER_01: But you didn't page you.
-
SPEAKER_01: Your office didn't page me.
-
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't page you.
-
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, don't know what that means.
-
SPEAKER_01: I haven't started, I have started this, like, side project.
-
SPEAKER_01: Enterscope is thinking about.
-
SPEAKER_00: not deal some with it. It's called But doesn't Atlantic have your leaving member rights if you quit your band?
-
SPEAKER_01: No. Why not? Because I was the last to join. They actually, when we rejoined, they had briefly had another bassist when we reformed. And then somehow when I, when he split the band shortly thereafter, my part didn't require any kind of restrictions on that.
-
SPEAKER_00: That's cool. Good for you.
-
SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, good with that project.
-
SPEAKER_00: It's called Budok.
-
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
-
SPEAKER_00: Oh, good.
-
SPEAKER_00: Terrific.
-
SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, I appreciate it.
-
SPEAKER_00: You got my number, you know?
-
SPEAKER_00: You never need a real good lawyer. Here I am.
-
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
-
SPEAKER_00: I didn't page you, though.
-
SPEAKER_00: Somebody's playing tricks on you, man.
-
SPEAKER_01: You got room in your roster, though, huh?
-
SPEAKER_00: Oh, sure. I'm not always looking for a good new talent.
-
SPEAKER_00: Huh.
-
SPEAKER_00: You know?
-
SPEAKER_01: Can I send you a...
-
SPEAKER_00: Sure, sure, my dear.
-
SPEAKER_01: Sure, man.
-
SPEAKER_00: That's Brian McPherson.
-
SPEAKER_00: Listen?
-
SPEAKER_00: With an I or Y?
-
SPEAKER_00: With an I.
-
SPEAKER_00: So, send it along.
-
SPEAKER_00: I'll give it a listen.
-
SPEAKER_00: M-A-C or M-C?
-
SPEAKER_00: Capital P.
-
SPEAKER_00: That's what I thought.
-
SPEAKER_00: That's right.
-
SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
-
SPEAKER_00: All right, Ben.
-
SPEAKER_00: Take it easy, man.
